Nihal picked up Best Speech Programme for BBC Asian Network. “Issues are addressed that you’ll rarely, if ever, hear on mainstream radio, channelled through an exceptional presenter who is sensitive and challenging in equal part and, above all, informed,” said the judges. “Quite simply, brilliant.”
The news will come as an embarrassment to BBC director-general Mark Thompson, who has said that the “coherence and relevance” of the BBC Asian Network is under strain.
The award will come as a fillip to staff at the station, which faces being axed as a national station and replaced only with local services in areas that have large Asian populations, such as Bradford and Leicester.
